Here are some tips for parents who have a newly adopted child. Adjusting to such a situation will be quite as difficult for the child as it will be for you. It becomes a harder task if the children understand that they are adopted. At this point you will have to ease the process of acceptance.

Balancing Out Time with Your Children

Being supportive is vital. The most difficult part of adoptive parenting is finding the balance between giving your children their own space and being able to spend as much time with them as possible. These two contradictory things are both very important. If you do not give your children their own space, you will come across as snoopy or nagging. This may have the effect of them closing themselves up.

The Need for Attention and the Finding the Right Amount

If you give them too much time on their own then you may come across as though you are neglecting them. Finding the perfect amount of each is a very hard thing to do. What makes it worse is that the amount of attention that is required varies from child to child. If you have more than one adopted child then you will have to figure this out for each child separately.

Handling Children of Your Own and Adopted Children Together

You will also have to help build a healthy relationship between your children as much as you try to build your own relationship with them. If you have children of your own as well, then the way in which you give attention to your adapted children will be different. Most adopted children become quite insecure thinking that you favor your own children over them. You have to destroy this image in their minds by not only being equally kind to each child, but also by being equally strict with each child.
